I’d love to hear the “things“ that work for you. Post them here so community can grow and benefit from an optimized life. If you don’t have your “Six” yet, this could be a good place to find some.

It’s slightly healthier than talking to yourself. Journaling is a great way to organize your thoughts, and I’ve personally found that doing a quick journal entry in the morning helps to set the tone for the day. Typically, I like to focus on my daily workload and where I’d like to focus my energy. A lot of times it’s how I pinpoint the frog, from the other “thing“ I do.. In all honestly I’m still struggling with a concrete time to shoehorn this into my day. I’ve been having pretty good success with getting in a few lines written while my coffee is brewing. The main reason I started journaling was because I was having some really freaky dreams. My good friend/guru told me that simply recording my dreams was a really good way to train myself to control my dreams to a degree. I decided that training to lucid dream was worth a shot if just to help with the nightmares. I never really got good at the lucid dreaming but the more I journaled the more I liked the clarity and direction it gave me. Clarity of purpose is invaluable. That is why having a journal habit is beneficial. The few minutes it takes to give yourself direction especially early in the morning is well worth the cost and is why it is one of my favorite Sixquickthings.

This “thing” is definitely a bit of a rip off from the old “eat the frog“ saying. It’s all about creating a get’er’done mindset. In my opinion this is the hardest “thing” to incorporate into a day. Most of the time I do it by making a mental list of tasks to accomplish and try to pinpoint the frog in the group. Once the frog is identified, usually the one I dread the most.. I try make it an early priority. Just get’er’done “quick” like ripping off a bandaid. That way the rest of the list typically goes smoothly in comparison. The uncomfortable part of this “thing” is aimed more towards personal growth. Putting yourself in uncomfortable situations can have the affect of raising the bar. With the right mindset, doing uncomfortable “things“ can be a life changing experience. I was inspired by Wim Hof to incorporate being uncomfortable into the Sixquickthings. Wim Hof has literally rewritten medical journals and broken records by being comfortable in uncomfortable situations. I would encourage you to learn more about Wim Hof if you haven’t already heard of him or his accomplishments. You can’t create diamonds without pressure

It’s a good “thing” to be in the know. Definitely better than being last to hear about something. I have been known to fall out of the fray and become reclusive from time to time.. I know how bad it feels to be blindsided by big news. In those situations I can’t help feeling like I should have known, or how long has this been this way, or why didn’t someone tell me.. etc. I’ve come to realize that those feelings are poisonous. It’s not helpful and it’s not anyone else’s responsibility to keep me informed. I should be the one in control of my own network. Further, to avoid those situation, I should be trying to build as strong a network as possible. Texting a friend or coworker that you normally wouldn’t opens the lines of communication and lowers the likelihood that you are left out of the loop. Even Further, your network can have a direct effect on the opportunities you see. I am beginning a career in real estate. I am still a lineman (electrical not football) but I am also land-lording on the side for supplemental money. After my last deal, I learned that most of the best properties never even hit the main stream market. The ability to act on privileged information can be a huge advantage in business and especially in real estate. A large part of having access to privileged information comes through the cultivation of a strong network.

This “thing” seems innocuous, insignificant even but I disagree. Aside from the obvious benefit to mouth hygiene, I’ve heard it has positive effects on heart health. I don’t know how true that is, but Google says it can help prevent heart disease. Definitely something easy to do with out sized benefits. The actual reason I have it as one of my current Sixquickthings is that I am a snacker. A lot of times I find myself snacking in between meals. Its one of my bad habits. Flossing has a way of subtly punctuating meal periods. I am much less likely to eat right after brushing my teeth, the taste is off putting and I don’t want crap in my teeth immediately after brushing. Flossing is a lot easier to do on the go, and a lot less socially awkward to do mid day. To recap, flossing takes like 1 minute, it improves your smile and your heart health and can possibly promote a less.. unhealthy diet.

First impressions are very important and body language is a huge part of it. Everyone knows how important it is to make a good first impression. It’s one reason why meeting your girlfriends parents or going on sales calls can be stressful. The reason I really like this “thing” is that, if you set your shoulders back and smile coming through the door, the very first time you enter another’s persons frame of vision, your posture makes you look confident and nice. Their very first impression of you is positive, which is a really good starting place. Setting your shoulders back is.. well it’s just good posture.. but doing it forces you to stand up taller and not be hunched over, giving you an air of a confidence. People like people with confidence. Being hunched over gives the impression of shyness and of having a submissive personality. It’s not an open inviting stance, and it is definitely something people inherently notice. Likewise, smiling, whether real or not, can also make you look confident. Even a fake smile has the power to trick your brain into feeling happier. Even if no one is around, if you can remember to set your shoulders back and smile when walking through doorways, you’ll improve both your posture and your mood. If I’m being honest, I still forget to do this “thing” a lot. There’s just a lot of doors.. Im kind of looking for ways to remember to do it more often. Im open to suggestions

Pretty self explanatory. Push ups and squats aren’t anything special. The idea behind this “thing” is to create a habit that is so easy to do that there’s no reason not to just do it. Personally, I like to start my day with a couple easy wins, just to get a little momentum going. This just happens to be an easy one that has outsized benefits. It has the effect of a big cup of coffee. It activates major muscle groups in the body and gets the blood pumping. After this quick easy workout I’m ready to tackle bigger and better and things. I’ve always envied those people who can wake up at 5am and get to the gym before work. I have tried to get into that arena myself but I tend to lose momentum, and quit. The barrier to entry is too high, after a few days I kinda just stop. I know I’m not the only one like this, there’s a reason people cancel their gym memberships in February and March after failing at their New Years resolutions to get fit. The beauty behind doing this “thing” is that you, by the end of a year, will have done vastly more push-ups and squats than you would have with a sparsely used gym membership, and saved time and money while doing it. I mentioned before that I‘ve had trouble starting workout habits in the past. It’s true, I kinda hate working out, but I want to be fit. One of the reasons for me creating Sixquickthings is that I want to find ways to succeed at areas of my life that I struggle with. A friend of mine recently helped me incorporate push-ups and squats into my routine. He suggested putting a self imposed barrier to entry. He suggested not allowing myself to shower until I do my pushups and squats. That way it kinda ties the two actions together and so far it’s been key to my workout habit formation.
